The launch of Maybelline Baby Lips was bigger than anyone could have imagined, with the whole world going mad for tinted lip balms. I was interested to see Maybelline add to their ‘baby’ line with their new ‘Baby Skin’ primer. Good primers are quite hard to find on the highstreet so I was desperate to give it a go.

The packaging is great because it’s small, it looks cute and is hygienic in a tube. The formula is like a silicone gel, so is very different from the high end primers I usually recommend like the Laura Mercier or Dr Lewinn’s one. With these sort of primers they don’t feel like a standard moisturiser, they feel more slippery and smooth. The idea of this product is to smooth out the skin, disguise any large pores and apparently it can be used either under or over makeup. It’s also fragrance-free which makes it instantly appealing for so many more people.

It definitely smoothes out the texture of the skin and it feels nice to apply foundation on top of it. It can also be used by itself if you don’t wear foundation and just want smoother looking skin. Although I feel like it does what it says on the tin, it’s not a product I personally love. I’m not a fan of these type of silicone based primers because although the are supposed to be great for oily skin, I feel like my skin feels greasier with it on. I don’t love how it feels on my skin, like an extra layer that my foundation can slide around on. If you do prefer these type of primers though, I think it’s one a lot of people will like.

It’s going to be released into Boots this month and will cost ยฃ7.99 so if you’re interested you can join the waiting list now. I’m looking forward to seeing what other Maybelline baby products are headed our way!

Is the Baby Skin something you want to try?

  1. I feel the same about silicone based primers but I’d still give this a try! It’s frustrating how little range you get in primers in the high street market! Thanks Lily! X

I was really interested in picking this primer up…only because I truly love a few of the Baby Lips products. But thanks for the warning about it being a bit slippery for underneath foundation. I also have oily skin, so I don’t know if that’d be the best product to pick up.

  4. Camille says:

In France it’s more than 15 euros so even though Iwant to try it I’m pretty sure it’s not worth it

  5. I also Like the Laura Mercier primers the best but this sound also quite nice. I may give it a go!

  6. Mira says:

I’m not fond of silicone based primers. Don’t think I will try this ๐Ÿ™‚

    xx Mira

  7. I totally agree! It made my skin feel greasy and that the make up would slip off. x

  8. Zazie Bibi says:

we’ve had this in singapore for a couple of months now i think, but i did think it felt quite greasy xx

  9. Chloe Walker says:

The infamous “baby” as returned and in force!
I love this such a dupe for porefessional!

  10. Alex Georgie says:

Really wanted to try this but silicone primers tend to break me out. Being slippery doesn’t sound too good either!

  11. Thank you very much for the review! ๐Ÿ™‚ I wanted to try this primer but silicone primers always break me out ๐Ÿ™ unfortunately not a primer for me as well.

  12. I will try it! I didn’t even know if was coming out! Thanks!

  13. Chloe Murray says:

I’m addicted to primer reviews lately as I really need one, but just can’t justify buying a high end one ๐Ÿ™ May have to give this a go.

  14. Rachel says:

definitely going to try this, kind of reminds me of the porefessional!

  15. Been waiting for ages for this to be launched in the UK I cant wait to try it. Apparently a good dupe for the porefessional be a good one to compare x

  16. Tabitha says:

Hmmm I’m not sure about this. In premise, it reminds me of The Porefessional, and I think it’s great that more ‘drugstore’ brands are branching out into primers!

  17. Ellie Fleet says:

The packaging looks very childish rather than high end. They’re definatly aiming these products at young teens! ๐Ÿ™‚

  18. I got this in sainburys and I don’t like it, I just did a post all about primers and sadly I couldn’t inculde this, although it does the job I find it so heavy and skin suffocating!

  19. I’m not keen on silicone rich primers either since I always worry about how they are going to go with the other products – will they go well or create roll off… hmm, might give this one a miss. Xx

  22. Chrissy says:

Reeeealllly excited to try this. My skin loves anything silicone based, it just translates into instant smoothness (is that a word?) for me, so I got a feeling I’m gonna love this!

  23. Mia says:

I actually tried it when it was on sale here at he Philippines and it made my skin, the name fit the product so much! My skin was like a baby’s cheek, so soft. I’m almost finished with mine and I’m sure I’m gonna buy a new one soon.

  24. I’d rather steer clear, my oily skin hates silicone-based primers, they make my it even oilier (if such a thing is possible)

  25. Amy Taggart says:

I agree with you about finding a good primer on a budget! I have oily skin so don’t know if this would be any good for me but thanks for the review! ๐Ÿ™‚ X.

  26. I feel the same about silicone based primers. I don’t think this is for me ๐Ÿ™‚

  27. Emily Knott says:

I think of lot of us feel the same about silicone based primers. I have a couple already and although it does smooth my skin and minimise my pores etc, I much prefer those without silicone. Might pick it up but I won’t be signing up on the waiting list!

  28. Laughingirl says:

I’m still looking for a really good primer so may have to give this a try but am not keen enough to go on a waiting list haha!

  29. The whole concept of ‘Baby Skin’ weirds me out a little bit, am I the only one?! Baby Lips I can handle, but I feel like the whole branding surrounding this product is just a little creepy!

  30. Primers is one of those things I just feel it’s worth spending an extra bit of cash on. But speaking of high street primers, have you tried the ones from Gosh?

  31. Maddy says:

I’m not sure about this, I feel like it would probably be quite clogging as well! x

    Maddy from UNSTITCHEDD

  32. Sybil Mae says:

I defiantly want to try this out ๐Ÿ™‚ I don’t wear primers enough to justify spending a lot of money on one, so i’m defiantly on the hunt for a cheaper alternative like this one! ๐Ÿ™‚

  33. Liz Randell says:

Wouldn’t have looked twice at this on the shelf because I would opt for benefit porefessional – looks like a cheaper dupe though. Perhaps better for those with drier skins?

  34. Lauren J says:

When I found out this was going to be released I was so excited, but when I started reading reviews many people have been disappointed by it so I purchased a high end primer instead. Thank you for the review it helped me to make my decision x

  35. Really can’t wait to give this a go, from what i’ve read it sounds just up my street!

    Samantha xo

  36. Stacey Ann says:

Still yet to try out the whole baby lips hype to be honest, so might have to give this one a go even though its silicone! x

  37. Becky says:

I loved the baby lips balms and can’t wait to give this a go!

  38. Neelam Patel says:

I can’t wait to try this out. Every time I go to the shops this is ALWAYS sold out! Your review makes me want to buy it even more! xx

  39. Ya I didnt like the baby lips balms, they seemed to make my lips more dependant on lip balm if that makes sense. And ya silicone primers on my combo skin is sometimes too much and too slipperyso I will give this a pass thanks to your research Lily!

  40. Oh, I haven’t seen this out- I’ll have to look for it!! Looks like an amazing product to give a try ๐Ÿ™‚

  41. Emily Allen says:

Despite what you’ve said I do want to try this primer, I have oily skin and my pores are particularly obvious so products that claim to deal with that and are afforable I just have to try :p

  42. lizzy orr says:

I like silicone-based primers so am excited for the release of this!
    Lizzy | elizabethsophiee x

  43. I’m certainly curious. It sounds a lot like the Becca primer I use now except a whole lot more affordable. I don’t mind the formula so I may give this a go!

  44. Megan Roisin says:

I’ve been using this and quite like it, it seems odd to go from lip balm to primer though as far as the ‘baby’ range goes!

  45. I’ve been interested in trying this out for ages! thank you for sharing!

  46. Chloe Ridout says:

Thank you for sharing so that I know to steer clear of this one!
However I spy the Dr. Jart BB cream in the back – now there’s a product!

  54. Anyone have an idea why at the bottom of the tube it says “Only for adults”? I am 13 and wanted to give this a try but now I am confused as to why I would not be allowed to use this?

    • I bought mine in the U.S. and it doesn’t say “only for adults” (: I’m 17 and I don’t have any problem with it. You can see a picture of the one I bought in my blog: (:

  55. Gemma N says:

Really want to give this one a try but was sold out, so it must be doing well at the moment, will be having another hunt for it this weekend see if I can nab a tube to try. Love the review.

  56. I actually really like this primer !! I only put it in areas that I need it and I actually give it about 5 seconds to soak into my skin and then it’s good to go .

  57. Boots and Superdrug are currently doing a ‘buy one get another half price sale’ on all their maybelline products! And both shops had the baby skin in stock

  58. Lipsiie says:

i brought this as soon as I saw it in boots, me and my friend went the day before and only the adverts were out, and the sales assistant said the stock will come tomorrow, when I went literally there was only 2 left ๐Ÿ™‚ ! I was waiting to do a review on this X

  59. Katy says:

Think I may get hold of this, I’ve heard it’s similar to Porefessional – which I’m running low on!

  60. Nia says:

Justt purchased this – my skin lovesss silicone primers they work well with my skin so ha-ugee thumbs up.

  61. Amy Keeling says:

I tend to struggle with silicone primers too, the Gosh Velvet one broke me out a couple of years ago and since then I’ve steered clear.

  62. Perhaps one to give a miss then, especially if its silicone heavy- a great pore blocker! Great and helpful review all the same. Check out my blog: xx
