Future Cinema presents Dirty Dancing

Future Cinema is one of my favourite things to do in London and I look forward to the day every year. Unlike Secret Cinema, you are told what the film is before you buy your ticket, but everything else is left as a surprise. In the past years I have been to Bugsy Malone and Grease, they were both amazing. I always leave thinking “that was the best day EVER!”.

So for those of you who don’t know what Future Cinema is, it’s a ‘cinema experience’. You buy your ticket (usually around £35) and spend the afternoon and evening at a London location and have the full film experience. The location is filled with hundreds of actors playing their part, there’s food and drink, themed games and of course a giant screen. You also dress up to fit the theme and everyone makes a huge effort!

How it usually works is you arrive around 5pm, grab some food, wander around and have some fun and then watch the film in the evening. Throughout the film the actors join in, do live performances and the audience really get involved. Grease was incredible last year, whilst I was sitting on a bench eating dinner from the diner the actors sat next to me and acted out the ‘Summer Lovin’ scene… it was amazing. For someone like me who’s childhood dream was to be in musical theatre, it’s literally a dream come true.

This year was Dirty Dancing and it worked so well, despite it not being an actual musical. A couple of days before the event all ticket holders received an email with details of where it is and what you need to bring. Every email is ‘in character’ and throughout the whole experience you are made to feel like the film has come to life. When we arrived the Kellerman staff guided us in, gave us an introduction talk and then let us loose to explore. The whole East London field was laid out just like Kellerman’s, with characters walking around all over the place. We grabbed some food and saved a spot near the screen. Before the film started we had hula hoop lesson and partied in the ‘staff quarters’ which was hilarious.

Throughout the film everyone is really interactive, cheering the famous one-liners and singing along to the songs. What I love about Future Cinema days is that everyone is so happy and excited to be there, it creates the best atmosphere. I like to go with a big group of friends, but last year I went with just two and we made friends with people we met there.

A lot more people have cottoned on this year and it’s grown massively, so you have to be really fast to get tickets. To get tickets you sign up on the website and then wait for that exciting email announcing the film and how to buy your tickets. I’m usually the one to forward the email on to all my friends and say ‘go, Go, GO!!!’ to make sure we don’t miss out.

I’d really recommend it! Have any of you been before?
