MONDAY MENDER: DEEP CLEANING MAKEUP BRUSHES

I find that on a Monday evening my brain is literally going mental. I think Mondays are mad for everyone and Monday night can often be a stressful one, so no matter how busy I am I like to take half an hour out to do something nice, something relaxing… something that isn’t work. Introducing the Monday Mender… First up, cleansing brushes. This may not be a fun task but it gives me a chance to zone out for a bit and think of NOTHING.

I’m going to be honest here and tell you that I don’t deep clean my brushes very often. I call it ‘deep clean’ because this isn’t the only way to clean brushes, you can also spot clean them. Spot cleaning is when you use something like the MAC brush cleanser, squirt it onto some kitchen towel and swirl your brushes in it to get off any makeup. It’s quick, easy and get’s the job done but every now and again it’s good to give them a deep clean to get out any bacteria. You use these on your face every day so you really don’t want them to be dirty because it will give you really bad skin.

To clean your brushes, it’s just like washing your hair but much more delicate. You can use any baby shampoo or I recently picked up Dr Bronner’s magic soap ‘Baby Mild’ which is great for cleaning brushes. I run the water so it’s luke warm and dampen the brushes slightly. It’s really important to keep the handle up because if any water leaks down into the funnel it can loosen the hairs causing them to fall out. I then squeeze a tiny amount of soap into my hand and swish the brush around in it. I then rinse it and lay it down flat to dry (do not put back in cup until dry!). I also use this time when they’re damp to reshape them with my hands into the correct shape for the brush. I leave them to dry and then voila, they’re done!

It’s really easy to do and so important too. It’s something I think can easily be neglected but brushes are expensive, so take care of them!

I hope this post helped. Are you guilty of depriving your brushes of a good wash?
