GHD ECLIPSE

If you know anything about me, or follow me on Twitter it’s likely that you’ll know I have   hair issues. Washing my hair has been one my most hated things to do since I was about ten. When I was younger, until I was about 20 I had VERY curly hair full of tight ringlets but as I’ve grown up, straightened my hair more and had it relaxed a few times along the way, it’s now just kind of normal curly hair. I do wear it curly occasionally but to make my life easier and to avoid daily washing, I wear it straight most the time. I swear by my GHDs, although it still takes about an hour to straighten it.

So when I heard about the new GHD Eclipse that has been completely re-designed with not one thing in common with the original GHDs, I was ready and listening. They took three and a half years, three and a half million pounds and three patents to make but they’re finally here. The GHD team wanted to make straighteners that made the whole process so easy, it wouldn’t be something we dread doing (like I do!). They have been designed with thick, coarse hair in mind but can also be used on all hair types.

So what’s different about the new version? The outside isn’t anywhere near as hot so you can grip them. They maintain what GHD have discovered is the perfect temperature for all hair types, 185º, and it’s maintained in the right places. This is because there are 3 heat sensors on each side of the plate that all work separately depending on how much hair is being clamped between them. The final difference which is one I noticed the most, is that they make your hair incredibly soft and shiny.

So nothing is perfect as we all know and as the queen of stressful hair straightening, here are my pros and cons…

Pros // They made my hair really soft and shiny. I was able to do bigger sections of hair at a time. They got to maximum temperature in under a minute. It comes with fancy accessories that actually really help, like a mat, a box case and a slide on rubber lid to keep them clamped together. They don’t get hot on the outside so no burnt fingers when you need to grab them to get the tricky bits. This also means when you curl your hair, the cool part of the straightener on the outside helps set the curls.

Cons // I found the tip of them don’t clamp together enough to get all my hair so the thinner bits underneath are a bit tricky. They are slightly chunkier which takes some getting used to compared to the smaller ones and it’s a little harder to do the roots and front bits. I still had to go over the same section of hair a few times (although it was quicker). The price tag is a lot higher because they cost two and half times more to make than the original ones do.

So that’s my verdict. I really like them and I think if your GHDs are getting a bit old then definitely update to these ones, but if you’re happy with your current ones then stick to them for now. Don’t bother waiting for competitors to join in either because apparently the patents mean noone can copy these for twenty years… wow!
