AN INTRODUCTION TO MAKEUP

It recently occurred to me that when writing my blog posts I often think of the beauty addict girl, the older lady who knows her brands, other bloggers and the girl’s who religiously comment on posts… but I often forget to think of the girl who is maybe visiting this blog for the first time hoping to get some advice before she dives into the world of beauty.

It’s an extremely overwhelming world and there are more products available than you could ever possibly use or need in a lifetime. I am lucky enough to be able to try a lot of products to then report back to you guys on their performance, but I wanted to make it clear that as fun as it is to beauty hoard, all these products are not a necessity. I often get asked, usually by my friend’s younger siblings which products they need, so here’s my post for the girl who is just getting into makeup… welcome to the wonderful world of beauty.

Now let’s be clear, before you worry about the likes of foundations and concealers, get yourself a nice basic skincare routine because no makeup will look good on bad skin. Maybe an ‘introduction to skincare’ post is in order? Although I’d usually send you over to Meg or Caroline for skincare advice.

Your skin is young and fresh so please don’t pile on the foundation, opt for something light with skin benefits included like the Dr Jart Water Fuse BB cream. It won’t cling in funny places, leave you with an orange face or rub off on the neck of your hoodie (it happens to the best of us) and it can be applied like a moisturiser so no need for expensive brushes. If you do need a concealer, use a little bit of the Collection Lasting Perfection concealer, it’s really inexpensive and works like a treat. I wouldn’t recommend going wild with bronzers until you have a good set of brushes and your face requires more sculpting… just stick to a nice blush that will brighten your complexion. A really affordable blush is The Natural Collection ‘Peach Melba’ and it’s one of my favourites from the highstreet.

For eyes, don’t worry about faffing with eye shadows. There are so many eyeshadows out there it’s unreal, I’d recommend starting with a cream eyeshadow base like the Maybelline colour tattoo 24hr. You can use your finger to apply it and it will stay put all day so you don’t need to re-apply. My favourite one is ‘On and On Bronze’ but they also come in more neutral shades. Mascara is a tough one because there are loads of great ones on the high street, such as Bourjois Volumizer, Soap & Glory Thick & Fast and Rimmel Lash Accelerator. Think about what you want from your mascara and buy accordingly.

For lips there’s only one product you need and it’s the Revlon Lip Butter. Pick a shade you like and it’ll give you natural colour whilst still moisturising your lips.

So that’s six products to get you started and hopefully that’s a little less over whelming. I hope you liked this post and I should have another one coming up for for those of you who are already into your makeup but are looking to update your makeup bag and want to know the best products for the job.

I’d love to hear your feedback on this post, as always!
