SEASONAL WARDROBE CLEAR OUT

I’m on a bit of a roll here, talking about scarves, home decor and now wardrobe clear outs! It’s this time of year that makes me want to sort everything out and start from scratch.

Twice a year, usually around May and October I like to switch up my wardrobe ready for the next season. I usually take everything out, try it all on and sort it into four piles; keep, throw away, give away and move into spare room. I like to separate my summer and winter clothes so that my wardrobe isn’t overwhelming and filled with inappropriate clothing.

This year’s clear out was different to my usual ones because I also wanted to rearrange my IKEA wardrobe and find a better way to use the space. We added in more poles and took away the drawers as I like to hang most my clothes so I can see what I have. Rich and I both now have our separate space in the wardrobe and it’s really clear to see what is inside without having to rummage through drawers.

I also have a strange obsession with hangers and I’m very picky when it comes to the ones I use. In the past I’ve always collected Topshop and H&M hangers but I wanted an upgrade now that I’d be hanging all of my clothes. In the end I went for the non-slip trouser and knitwear hangers from Morplan. These are really great because no matter what you hang off them, even silky tops, they will not slip off. They are also nice and curvy so they won’t leave marks in the shoulder of your tops. The trouser hangers are really great and save so much space.

I think it’s really good to go through your wardrobe at least twice a year, it also kind of helps to clear your mind in a funny way. Here are my tips for being ruthless…

– Try everything on and try it on with other items.
– If you haven’t worn something in 6 months (unless you really think you’ll want to again) then it has to go.
– Get a bin bag and fill it with clothes to take to a charity shop, you’ll be more likely to let it go if you know it’s going to a good cause.
– Move your really summery clothes into another room or drawer during the winter and vice versa. They’ll just get in the way and clutter your wardrobe.
– Have someone sit with you whilst you try things on… make sure it’s someone honest who knows you well.

The best bit is when you’re done, you can reward yourself with a little shop and you know the few pieces you buy will get a special place in the wardrobe and won’t get shoved in with the rest of the clutter.

Let me know if you also have a seasonal wardrobe clear out and good luck if you’re going to attempt it yourself!
